Mathematical Fluency: Moving from Acquisition to Fluent Foundations for Math Skills

In this session, participants will explore the foundations of mathematical fluency and its role in building mathematics proficiency. The instructional hierarchy and its critical role in guiding students from skill acquisition to fluency and generalization serves as an essential foundation for the session. Participants will learn to identify when students are ready for fluency-building instruction, as well as identify priority math skills for which fluency is essential for long-term success. The session also introduces assessment strategies to determine when fluency-building is the appropriate instructional match, ensuring alignment with students’ current skill levels. Finally, participants will learn how to implement fluency-building approaches effectively across all tiers of instruction—from Tier 1 whole-group strategies to targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions—empowering them to support every student’s journey toward mathematical proficiency.

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

Describe the instructional hierarchy and its importance in developing students' mathematics skills
Describe an operational definition of fluency across academic and behavioral skills 
Identify priority skills in mathematics for which fluency is essential
Describe assessment approaches to identify when fluency-building activities are the correct instructional match for students' skill level
Describe approaches to fluency-building for implementation in Tier 1 (Whole Group) instruction, and in Tiers 2 and 3 (Small Group) intervention
